SISTERHOOD

Sisterhood President Debbie Ross  Debbie Ross, President

This month, I will again focus a portion of my Shalom article on a specific program offered by Sisterhood.  Many times, you will note that Sisterhood donates a portion of raised funds to Mazon.  Following is a brief description of this important organization.

The word, Mazon, is a Hebrew word that means 'food' or 'sustenance'.  Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger is an anti-hunger organization that was founded in 1985.  It is the only national Jewish organization which exclusively dedicates its efforts to the issue of hunger and poverty, domestically and around the world, assisting people of all faiths and nationalities. MAZON has granted more than $50 million, since its founding, to emergency food providers of all types.  Mazon recognizes the importance of not only addressing the short-term and pressing needs of the hungry but also of long-term planning, advocacy & education, partnership grants and strategic initiatives. Their mission statement states that they not only want to feed the hungry; they want to end hunger and its causes.  Their approach follows the Talmudic commandment to feed the poor and the stranger.  So, the next time you see a note on a Sisterhood flyer that a portion of funds will be donated to Mazon, you will know your contributions reach much further than our Sisterhood, our Temple or our community.  They reach to the heart of our Jewishness, expressing our highest ideals of tzedakah and tikkun olam.

By the time this article is printed, we will have enjoyed our Sisterhood paid-up luncheon and our New Year's Eve party (co-sponsored with Brotherhood).  I anticipate that we will be looking back on both events with satisfaction. Following are some of the wonderful events planned for the first quarter of the New Year, and we look forward to having you join us!

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

What does Membership in Sisterhood Mean to You?

Arriving at the kitchen on a Sunday or weekday morning and learning to fold pastry into hamantaschen triangles and seeing your children do the same thing.

  • Calling people on the phone and making a friend.
  • Learning something new in a group,  and your teacher is a bellydancer  or a tango instructor.
  • Finding out you’re part of the sandwich generation and what to do about it.
  • Going to the Post Office with a package of 50 phone cards and Chanukah greetings made by the Religious school, and mailing it to Iraq.
  • Selling Judaica to the Nursery school, Religious school  and their parents.
  • Learning about wine, tasting it with great food and having a party with Brotherhood.
  • Modelling the latest fashion or seeing your children model at the fashion show, and winning a gift basket you really wanted.
  • Sharing a Sisterhood Shabbat by attending a catered lunch and making either a bracelet, mezzuzah or a craft afterwards.
  • Giving away suits that you don’t use and helping someone else get an interview outfit from “Dress for Success”.
  • Walking to eradicate breast cancer or making a donation.

All of the above and more.

GROWING_FUND GOLDEN_BOOKS

Sisterhood From the Heart logo

Dear Members and Friends of Sisterhood,

For many years, we have offered Growing Fund and Golden Book greeting cards as a way to make donations to Sisterhood while honoring or remembering your loved ones. While some of you may fondly remember this service, others may be hearing of it now for the first time.

The Growing Fund was established to honor happy occasions in the lives of our youngest members. You may wish to honor a friend or relative’s child for a birthday, Bar Mitzvah, a good report card, losing a tooth or other milestone.

Golden Books were designed to be sent as a condolence to honor the memory of a loved one or friend.

Both of these cards are mailed to your recipients by Sisterhood and will be mentioned in the Shalom, acknowledging your generous donation. These donations go directly to Sisterhood to support the many activities, good works and scholarships that we provide our temple community.

We have included a coupon book to make donating these cards more convenient. Simply fill out the coupon as indicated and include a payment of $7 for each card in a check made out to Sisterhood of Temple Shalom.  Mail it to RoseAnne Devinsky, 5 Brentwood Terrace, Middletown, NJ 07748. Click here for coupon book.

Thank you in advance for keeping Sisterhood in your thoughts when it comes time for a donation to acknowledge a loved one, and thank you for your continued generosity.

B'Shalom,

RoseAnne Devinsky
