Tzedakah Project of the Month:

TempleShalomNursery Schoolteaches the students the importance of helping others in the community.  Each Friday as part of our Shabbat activities, our students have the opportunity to donate money to a worthwhile charity.  The children learn about the charity and how their donations are helping others.

During the months of September and October, Tzedakah money will be donated to Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger.  Money donated to Mazon is used to alleviate hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds.

WELCOME

Welcome to Nursery School!

September and October bring many new adventures.  We will begin a new school year, meet new friends and welcome a new year on the Jewish calendar – 5769.  All of these events share a certain excitement, a promise of things to come.

The Nursery School staff is looking forward to a year of fun and learning with your children.  At Temple Shalom Nursery School your children will experience many firsts - first school assembly with special visitors, first field trip and first school bus ride.  We will celebrate the Jewish holidays & festivals and learn all about ourselves& our world.  Using weekly thematic units, we will enjoy learning through play.  Our age appropriate activities are geared toward enhancing our language arts, cognitive, art, music, science, social & motor skills and much more.

Parents are welcome to enjoy firsts also – first opportunity to be involved in a Parent Organization, first Back to School night and Join the Class week.   Our Parent Organization is a vital part of our nursery school.  Our parent volunteers help to facilitate our Chanukah celebration, Thanksgiving feast, Scholastic Book Fair; Passover Seder….the list goes on and on.

This year will also be our first year with Cantor Marnie Camhi.  Cantor Camhi will be at Nursery School two times each month.  We look forward to learning new music with her on Shabbat and during other celebrations.  Please join me in welcoming Cantor Camhi to our Temple Shalom and Nursery School family.

In the Nursery School Classes

As September begins, we will learn classroom routines and review pre-math skills with the themes “The Shapes & Colors of My New Class” and “Counting On My New Friends.”  Then, it will be time for activities about “Rosh Hashanah – A New Year.”

In October, we will “Fall Into Sports” and learn about “Using Our Manners & Yom Kippur.”  In this month of special holidays, we will also learn about Sukkot and Simchat Torah.  We will finish the month by identifying the “Community Helpers All Around.”

Our first session of Mommy & Me begins in September.  Children ages 14-30 months get to experience a mini nursery school day.  The children explore dramatic play and manipulative toys, do a craft project and participate in circle time.  Your child will also gain social skills by enjoying a snack with friends and playing on our playground or in the social hall.

Books bring cheer to hospitalized kids

Hospitalized area children recently got a special gift from Temple Shalom Nursery School—almost 100 books collected by the temple nursery school committee, the schoolchildren, and their families and teachers.

The books were donated to the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and will be added to the hospital’s collection of books that are used to pass the time by children staying at the hospital and by parents and volunteers who read to the youngsters during their hospital stay.

“For hospitalized children, who are scared and away from home, a familiar book can be a comforting experience,” said Steven Kairys, M.D., head of pediatrics at Jersey Shore. “We also use the books to promote literacy and have volunteers and parents read to very young children who can’t read on their own yet.”

The book drive, part of the temple’s Mitzvah of the Month program, was planned by the temple’s nursery school committee. Mitzvah of the Month is a yearlong project to help the community through a different project each month. Past Mitzvah of the Month programs included food collections for the needy and blood drives.

In addition, each month the nursery school collects items for or sends donations to a different group. This year alone, the children have donated to such causes as Meals on Wheels, the American Dental Association Foundation and the Jewish Guild for the Blind.

Temple Shalom Nursery School teaches our students the importance of helping others in the community,” said nursery school director Cindy Terebush. “We teach the children about who will be receiving their donations and they were excited to be able to give books to other children. They had a great deal of sympathy for the children who could not go to school and go out to play because they needed to be in the hospital.”

HOPATHON RESULTS

Temple Shalom nursery students raise thousands for MDA

Small feet can take big steps toward finding a cure for muscular dystrophy.

That’s what the children of Temple Shalom Nursery School proved recently when they raised over $2,200 during a “hopathon” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Forty-three children hopped for two minutes and received $2,255 in sponsorship and matching funds. The children also collected tzedakah (the Hebrew word for charity) every Friday for a total donation to the MDA of $2,290.

In leading up to the Hopathon, teachers used the age-appropriate curriculum provided by MDA to teach all about disabilities and children with muscular dystrophy.

“Coordinating the MDA Hopathon at Temple Shalom Nursery School was such a rewarding experience,” says nursery school director Cindy Terebush. “Not only did we perform a service for those families who live with the challenges of muscular dystrophy, we also taught our children lessons about awareness and acceptance. The children had fun hopping and also have a better appreciation for people living with physical challenges.”
